Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 Cup cornmeal

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons onion powder

  • 1/3 Cup yellow or white onion, finely minced

  • 1 Cup whole milk

Directions

  • Whisk all dry ingredients and the egg together in a large bowl.
  • Add whole milk and continue whisking until everything is completely incorporated, and you have a smooth batter.
  • Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 45 minutes.
  • Heat oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Using a small ice cream scoop or round spoon, scoop up spoonfuls of batter and carefully drop them into the hot oil. They should be as round as possible, and not too big (or else they will not be cooked on the inside by the time the outside is done). The blobs of batter should be smaller than a golf ball.
  • Fry until a deep golden-brown color (usually 4-7 minutes).
  • Remove from oil and set on a cooling rack or paper towels. Sprinkle with coarse salt while still hot.
