“Better than Sweet Baby Ray’s” BBQ Sauce Recipe

“Better than Sweet Baby Ray’s” BBQ Sauce Recipe

This is my favorite homemade barbecue sauce recipe that goes great with just about anything. If you like Sweet Baby Ray’s, you will love this sauce. I don’t call this a “copycat recipe” because I think it tastes significantly better than Baby Ray’s. Yes it’s sweet, but it doesn’t taste like processed high-fructose corn syrup (which is a main ingredient in SBR’s).

Ingredients

  • 12 oz tomato paste

  • 1 cup water

  • 6 Tablespoons white vinegar

  • 2/3 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup molasses

  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke

  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce

  • 2 teaspoons Kosher salt

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon ancho chili powder

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika

  • 2 teaspoons mustard powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions

  • Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a very low simmer. Simmer the sauce on low heat, stirring regularly to make sure the sugars don’t scorch, until it is the desired consistency (usually between 20-30 minutes).
  • Allow sauce to cool completely. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate. It can be frozen for longer-term storage.
